BRISTOL, Tenn.—The Bristol Tennessee Police Department has welcomed a new addition to the city’s K9 unit and his name is Sonny.
Sonny is an 18-month-old yellow lab, and was acquired from Xtreme Concepts, Inc., a security solutions firm based in Birmingham, Alabama. Sonny will serve alongside his partner, Officer Chesney Griffin.
According to a news release, together, the pair recently completed two weeks of intense training in narcotics detection, article searches, and tracking, and are certified in each of these three disciplines by the North American Police Work Dog Association. Although training was only completed on March 25, Officer Griffin and Sonny already made their first narcotics case over the weekend in the form of a seizure of methamphetamine.
Sonny joins the department to replace Officer Griffin’s former partner, K9 Ruger, who tragically succumbed to cancer last December.
“We appreciate the public show of support for K9 Ruger, and believe K9 Sonny will have the same type of positive impact on our community,” said Captain Charlie Thomas.
