KABUL, Afghanistan — Last week, U.S. Special Operations Forces rescued the son of a former Pakistani Prime Minister who had been held hostage for over three years. Ali Haider Gilani, son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was rescued in a joint operation between U.S. SOF and local Afghan commandos.
“Working alongside our Afghan partners, we will continue to make it clear that there is no safe haven for terrorists in Afghanistan,” Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said.
As reported by Shadow Spear, the Defense Secretary believes that the counter-terrorism mission “demonstrates the growing capabilities and effectiveness of the Afghan security forces and is an excellent example of the strong security and intelligence partnership between Afghan and U.S. forces under Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.”
U.S. forces are working to get Gilani home as soon as possible. “We will work with the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan to return him home safely after he receives a medical evaluation,” the defense secretary said.
Four terrorists were killed in the raid and no U.S. or Afghani forces were killed or injured.
